Robert Steven Koffler
A retired art teacher and exhibiting artist for 50 years, Robert brings to Sidetracks Art Gallery works from the past 15 years – in which his previous abstract work has been deeply influenced by the relocation of his studio from the northern fringes of Philadelphia to heart of the Berkshire landscape in western Massachusetts. His mastery of color and perspective have entered the service of woods, falling water and daylight filtered by the hours and by the seasons.
Working large and small, his oils on linen and canvas delight and tease the eye with movement and light – through shadow to what lives deep or lies just beyond. The artist speaks of this work as "forms and colors moving within the formal space of the rectangle" – the significant holding line of the frame. His color palette and skilled brushworks make the paintings as it were dance on the gallery walls.
Robert is well known in the greater Philadelphia area because of his many years on the faculties of Kendall School of Design, Moore College of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, which culminated in his association since 1981 with Art Institute of Philadelphia where he retired in 2011. Well rounded in his craft, he has taught figure drawing, anatomy, perspective, art history, painting, graphic design and advertising design.
He studied at Temple, Syracuse and Boston Universities, and received his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania, after which he was a resident at Cini Foundation in Venice, Italy. His lectures have been featured at Bezalel Academy of Fine Arts in Jerusalem; University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill; Goddard College in Vermont; University of Houston; Temple University in Philadelphia; and at Haystack School of Crafts, Deer Isle, Maine.
